Making strategy games work on a small screen

Making strategy games work on a small screen

March 19, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

Strategy games ask you to read a lot of information at once, which sounds terrible for a phone. But the good ones solve it with smart zoom, clear icons, and a confirm step before you commit a move.

Ironline Tactics is my go-to example lately. Its maps are compact on purpose, so you never lose track of your units, and the confirm tap has saved me from countless misclicks.

The mistake many ports make is cramming a desktop interface onto glass. Everything ends up too small to touch reliably. Native mobile strategy games design around the thumb from the start.

If you like a good think but assumed the genre didn't belong on your phone, the recent crop is worth another look.
