Turn-based RPGs that actually fit a phone

People assume RPGs belong on a big screen with a controller. After a month of playing them only on my commute, I'd argue the opposite for turn-based ones. When combat waits for your input, a phone is perfect.

The trick is games that save anywhere and let you read the board in a glance. Emberfall Saga does this well — I can start a fight, get off the tram, and pick it up that evening without losing a thing.

What matters most is menu depth. Too many taps to change gear or cast a spell and the whole thing turns into a chore. The best mobile RPGs flatten those menus and put the fun one tap away.

If you've been sleeping on the genre because you think it's too heavy for a phone, try a short one first. You might be surprised how naturally it fits into the gaps in your day.
